Back in the olden days, before city water and rural wells with electric pumps, a source of water was the runoff rainwater from the roof into a storage cistern. These cylindrical containers of brick or waterproof-lined wood were 6 to 10 feet in diameter and 7 to 12 feet deep.
Given roof debris and standing water, these cisterns had to be cleaned periodically.
